Hubble Finds Cepheids in M31

Views of a famous pulsating star, the Cepheid variable V1 in M31, taken nearly 90 years apart. The small white box just above center outlines the HST view taken by the Wide Field Camera 3. Below right is Hubble's original plate, with the variable star noted (he WROTE directly on the plate!!). The star helped Hubble show that M31 lies beyond our galaxy, radically and permanently changing our view of the universe.

As homage to Hubble, the HST WFC camera took this series of images showing the variation of Hubble's famous Cepheid variable star, "V1".
