The galaxies in this cluster are all at the same distance, so their different apparent brightness accurately reflects their different intrinsic luminosity. Clearly, there are a few very bright (luminous) galaxies, more medium luminosity galaxies, and many faint (low luminosity) galaxies. The relative number of galaxies at each luminosity is called The Luminosity Function.
