Two galaxies with strong bars. Note strong star formation at the ends of each bar and the dust lanes running down the bar on the leading side. Hydrodynamic simulations find gas flows with weak shocks at the ends of the bar and a steady inflow down the bar. This is thought to be one way in which massive black holes are "fed" and grow.
