Spheroidal (Dwarf Elliptical) Profiles

Most dwarf ellipticals are of the "diffuse" kind, called "Spheroidals" by Kormendy, they are from a different lineage than normal ellipticals, and are more closely associated with late type disk galaxies. One of the indications of their difference is the fact that their light profiles are more like exponentials than deVaucouleurs profiles (Sersic n = 1, not 4).

 

The upper profiles (mag vs log r) are normal ellipticals with Sersic n ~ 4-6. The lower profiles are dwarf ellipticals (spheroidals) (mag vs linear r), showing exponential profiles (open circles are dwarf irregulars for comparison).
