A selection of optical spectra (3400 - 5400 A) from Heckman's 1980 survey of the nuclei of nearby bright galaxies. Most are red and dominated by stellar absorption lines. A few have weak emission from star formation. One has a radically different spectrum -- that of a Seyfert 1.
