Objective Prism Spectroscopy

When a thin prism is bolted in front of the objective of a Schmidt telescope, all images forming at the focal plane are small spectra.

Direct image (upper) and image with objective prism (lower). Each object is recorded as a small spectrum.

Amongst the many star spectra, there is an object with a strong single emission line which appears as a single dot. Objects with emission lines, or blue continua, are relatively easily found by this method.
