Hidden Broad Line Regions Revealed! |
Normal light spectra of NGC 1068 show Seyfert 2 character (no broad lines). However, the spectrum of the polarized light shows a Seyfert 1 spectrum (with broad lines). The polarized light is scattered -- it shows us what we would see if we looked down the axis. The right image shows the total intensity image with polarization E vectors superposed, showing a centro-symmetric pattern, pointing to the source of illumination.
